St Giles Children and Youth
Sharing the Gospel with children and young people in Islington
What drives us
We aim to share the Gospel of Jesus with everyone we can, first of all our own children and young people, but also those children and young people from the district we serve. St Giles has a long history of working with the children and youth of the area. We have a number of activities aimed at young people and children and also run various holiday clubs and days out. while the work is headed up by our children's worker, Emile, it is only made possible by a team of willing volunteers (all CRB checked) drawn from the church of St Giles and most of the work runs to a small budget.
Sunday Schools
St Giles has been running Sunday schools for all of it's 150 years and they form the main backbone of the children's work within the church. Each sunday school spends time each week praying, learning bible stories and being taught how these apply to their life. In addition to this time is often devoted to various craft activities, singing and playing games.
Sunday schools currently meet during our All age Worship and Comunion services (from 11am Sundays) with the third sunday of each month, our All-age Together service being a chance for the entire church body to worship and learn together. At current there are two different age groups in our morning Sunday schools: 5 to 10s and 11 to 15s. These are mainly directed towards the children of the church family however they are open to all who want to come.
Wednesday Night Club
Our main outreach to the youth of the area. Each week we meet for two hours from 7 till 9pm, Wednesday night. The club is open to all youth aged between 10 and 18 years old.
While we try to organise a couple of games, our main focus is relational. Each week we spend time chatting and in various activities, in addition all our youth are welcome to bring any homework they may wish and many do (art seems to be the most popular at the moment). The youth are given full access to the lower hall, drawing room and games room (with table tennis, darts, snooker/pool, and table football).
Holiday Clubs
Each year we run between 2 and 3 Holiday clubs for children of various ages. Typically our Holiday clubs run over Easter Holiday and Autumn half-term, however we have run holiday clubs at different times of the year. These are open to children of any background who want to come. We look at various themes and activities, for example this year at Easter we will be sending a team of reporters to cover the events of the resurrection and beyond and last year we travelled back to the bible times.
Day trips
Each year we organise a number of day trips to various places and events. Last year's August Bank holiday family beach trip to Southend was a real success with a mix of various different people amking it a day out to remember. This year we hope to run a number of different events. Including another beach trip in August, attending the Big Church Day Out in May and rumour abounds of a youth trip to an (as yet) unnamed theme park.
